ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The game of hockey has changed since the 1990s.
In the days of Tony Twist and Kelly Chase, players would drop the gloves and often end up without a jersey. In the 1990s, the NHL began to make changes due to player safety after the pulling of the jersey became a temporary advantage in a fight.
The NHL wanted to make sure jerseys stayed on, so the fight strap was born. Players are now required to strap their jerseys to their pants to prevent them from coming off.
When the fight strap was first implemented, if a player’s jersey came off during a fight, he would get a game misconduct and be tossed from the game.
